Trapped in a Dream

A good Xmas movie is, by far, the 2015 Krampus. I love that movie, especially because of the adorable demonic Gingerbread men! How could you not think those little psychos are just so cuuute?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ The demonic toys/decorations were what really made that film worth watching, truly๐Ÿ˜‚. And, before we get any further, SPOILERS! ๐Ÿ˜‚ If you haven't seen that movie yet, go watch it! Like I said, the little demonic toys/decorations are worth it๐Ÿ˜‚.

The ending of the film is truly what inspired this piece. Again, SPOILERS! ๐Ÿ˜‚. The ending scene plays out where the family's home is trapped inside a snow globe and Krampus sets it down on a table/shelf. As the camera pans out, you can see that Krampus' room is filled with all types of different snow globes that have other houses and things inside them, giving the implication that he has trapped other families inside them.

It is both a scary and beautiful scene, especially as it's followed by an adorable gingerbread man jump scare!๐Ÿ˜‚ So, given that this piece was amongst other abstract works for the 2020 The Gloomy Challenge, I thought it would be interesting to replace the houses in the snow globes with images of different things that most people put such strong meanings to, despite the fact that they really don't matter in the grand scheme of things. Things like money, love/lust, outward appearances and even our own minds. My only limitation, as far as the challenge, was the given color pallet for each illustration that I submitted. Given that the colors were "gloomy" colors, I felt they fit the idea I was going for anyways๐Ÿ˜‚.

I wanted to also keep the abstract premise intact, while not being abstract too much๐Ÿ˜‚. So I thought doing a sort of collage style would be interesting and made the setting the only illustrative asset, while making the snow globe innerds more collage-y, altered images that you might see in a collaged book. Maybe. I don't know! ๐Ÿ˜‚ But it was fun and a new challenge, so overall I was happy!

Clearly my skills at digital illustration are lacking in...skills๐Ÿ˜‚. But it was fun for sure! What I had done was, first, hand draw/ink a sketch of what I wanted everything to look like with no real concern for the details inside the globes. Once I finished the sketch, I scanned it and imported it into Clip Studio Paint (CSP) and converted the image to vector lines. That allowed me to mess with the lines and make the certain globes look more realistic while letting the others look more vague and illustrative. I wanted to make a similar den environment like from the movie Krampus, but also wanted to try my hand at Tim Burton's style a little. Did I succeed? Not really๐Ÿ˜‚. But that's ok! It's abstraaaaaaaact~ ๐Ÿ˜‚.
